Military service can definately be a cause for divorce for some couples, but it is not the #1 cause for Americans. Money is.
I served as a JAG officer in the Navy for 6 years. I saw my share of sailors getting divorced. It is almost an epidemic in the military. Mostly the major stresses to such marriages are the constant changes in duty stations and the stress of never knowing when one might deploy, or when one may return, if they will at all.
From what I’ve seen it’s caused by loneliness. Heck, half the time the young GIs married the “pretty” young thing that used themselves as bait to get married and get that soldiers BAH etc… The “wives” knew the pay scale better than most soldiers. A year or two later the solider is surprised that that girl he married, that he met at the strip club, is now dating an other solider of higher rank? Puh-leaseeee….
The number 1 contributing factor in Divorce is Marriage.
The #1 cause for divorce is Communication. Without communication, you have nothing but trouble!
Actually the divorce rate is higher for civilians and the divorce rate has gone down in the Army since the war. But, I would say most people get a divorce because one of the people was nuts to begin with, and the other overlooked it because they loved them. Another factor is the feeling of isolation a spouse may feel during a deployment. But, there are other things a person can do rather than get a divorce. Help is only 1 phone call away.
The military probably has little or nothing to do with the divorce. Getting divorced is all about the two people involved and their ability to work together.
the average divorce rate for Americans is 50%. the average divorces rate for US military personnel is less than 30%.
Military marriages on the whole are stronger and more committed BECAUSE of the difficulties they face. .
I dont know if it is nuber one. i do think its the long deplyments and too many affairs. no one has respect for others anymore.
military service and marriage are not a good mix……….anyone serving in the military should not get married

Half of all marriages end in divorce and not 1% of United States population is in the military for active duty or has been.
