Only way I can think of is if he placed an ad in the newspaper or legal news stating that he will no longer be responsible for bills you make. This is common when a divorce is being filed for. Otherwise, you won’t know until the papers arrive.
Lots of jurisdictions have online registries. Try googling your county/state and family court registry. There should be a search option. Failing that you can attend at the local courthouse and speak to a clerk. He/She can search the registry and tell you if divorce papers have been filed.
Other than that…when you are served with a petition.
